About Richard and This Site
This site is a virtual gallery showing 202 of my best photographs. I have an active account on
flickr with many more photographs as well as a
weblog where I discuss photography among other things.
I love photography: working with a camera to make images and sharing those images on the web and in print. I also love story-telling and I've tried to give my images context by providing captions that hopefully will inform and entertain.
I have a BFA and an MFA in fine and applied arts from the University of Oregon where I studied ceramics, design, and photography and taught ceramics, basic design, and computer applications for artists.
In the late 1970's, after personally discovering the power of computers to aid in writing and learning, I became a pioneer in advocating their use, especially for children with language learning problems. My career as a professional artist and art educator was put on hold for twenty years while I spread the word on technology in education. In the process, I joined advisory boards of numerous companies including Apple Computer, Inc. and AlphaSmart, Inc.
My current photographic work is the beginning of my re-entry into the art and photography world.

Tools
I use a Canon 5D digital SLR. I've grown fond of shallow depth of field and low light photography and because of this I've assembled a collection of fast prime (fixed focal length) lenses.
Images are organized and edited with iPhoto or Aperture.
